Craig A. Gump

Terrestrial Ecologist

Mr. Gump is responsible for managing Clean Water Act Section 404 and 401 permits for Terra Technologies’ Kansas City Office. He has performed multiple wetland delineations and stream system jurisdictional assessments in the Kansas City area as well as assisted with rain garden, low impact development, and stream restoration design. As an assistant within Terra Technologies' Wetland & Stream Mitigation Banking Division, he aids in the research, design, and monitoring of large scale wetland and stream restoration projects. He is also the firm's point of contact for endangered species audits in the western Missouri and Eastern Kansas market.

  • Linear Rain Garden Design - Roeland Park, Kansas – As a subconsultant to a civil engineering lead, Mr. Gump is assisting senior staff in the design development of the first linear rain garden adjacent to a concrete lined channel. As each rain garden will be privately-owned and all rain gardens are interconnected in a linear fashion, Mr. Gump was faced with project challenges that include grade control configuration, plant material selection, and public education and acceptance. The project serves to provide improved water quality function to a 1000+ feet length of jurisdictional ephemeral channel in an established residential neighborhood. The project is scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2008, and is nominated for recognition through the Mid-America Regional Council for environmental excellence.
  • Schlitterbahn Vacation Resort - Kansas City, Kansas - Mr. Gump worked alongside senior staff in the preservation, enhancement, and creation of terrestrial and aquatic habitat on the new 500+ acre Schlitterbahn Water Park across from the Village West development. The Schlitterbahn family, recognized worldwide for their history of conservation-minded development, met with Mr. Gump and other scientists at Terra Technologies weekly to integrate hallmark features into the design of their site. He also was the principle designer of the off-site compensatory mitigation project that included riparian corridor restoration and herbaceous wetland creation. Project construction was completed in the Summer of 2009, and the mitigation area was constructed in the Fall of 2009.
  • Ritter Plaza Commercial Development - Lee's Summit, Missouri - Mr. Gump assisted in the Section 404 permitting and design of a large scale stream mitigation area for a private commercial development. He assisted in the layout and design of BMPs, which included: rain gardens, stormwater bioswales, riparian corridor plantings, bank stabilization improvements, and a 1.9 acre rain garden forebay. The BMPs will provide significant environmental benefits to the community and serve to enhance the chemical, biological, and physical properties of the stream channel. Construction was completed in the Fall of 2009.
  • Lauren’s Bay Residential Development – Topeka, Kansas–Mr. Gump conducted a stream and wetland jurisdictional assessment on and managed the Section 404 Permitting and 401 permitting process for a private residential development. He also was a principle designer of the stream mitigation plan which included bank stabilization and stream channel improvements, wetland creation, eradication of exotic species, and installation of native species of trees, shrubs, grasses, and forbs. He will also oversee project construction which will begin in the Spring of 2010.
  • Deerfield & Hodges Wetland and Stream System Delineation – Johnson County, Kansas - The owner proposed to develop a site containing wetlands as well as intermittent and ephemeral streams. Mr. Gump conducted the field work and developed the report as part of the jurisdictional assessment of impacts to waters of the United States. A total of 0.21 acre of wetlands and 11,403 linear feet of jurisdictional stream channels were identified and reported.
  • Enclaves Residential Development, Pleasant Hill, MissouriMr. Gump worked alongside senior staff in the delineation of lower order ephemeral channels within a proposed large parcel residential subdivision in north Pleasant Hill. Geomorphology is the study of stream dynamics. Streams are often jurisdictional waters of the United States when they progress from erosional features to higher order streams with defined limits of stream bed and bank. Recognition and accurate assessment of geomorphic classification is of paramount importance in order to engineer stream protections against increases in run-off associated with site development.
