Videojet Facility
Decommissioning

Belleville, Illinois

Client:
Videojet
Technologies, Inc.

Terra Technologies was retained by Videojet Technologies, Inc. (Videojet) for the cleaning of the rooms associated with the former ink manufacturing activities and decommissioning of process and storage tanks no longer used by the Videojet Belle Valley facility.  The ink process decommissioning included aboveground storage tank (AST) system dismantling and recycling, ink storage and mixing tank cleaning and removal, fume hood and dust collection system bag house dismantling and recycling, and floor cleaning activities.

Six aboveground storage tanks were located in a tank farm located west of the building and ink manufacturing rooms.  The tanks were used to store xylene, glycol ether db, kerosene, denatured alcohol, diacetone alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol, which were used in the ink manufacturing process. The remaining contents of the tanks were carefully removed due to their highly flammable nature and low flash point.  The AST's were then purged of flammable vapors using an eductor.  The entire system was grounded to avoid sparking.  Once the tanks were cleaned, a track excavator was used to lift the tanks out of the secondary containment area and load them onto a lowboy tractor-trailer for transportation to the disposal/recycling facility.

Three additional smaller aboveground storage tanks were used in the interior of the building as part of the ink manufacturing process: two ink tanks and a mixing tank.  Based on the amount of ink residue on and in the tanks, cleaning would be extremely difficult and time consuming.  Therefore, the tanks were removed for disposal.

A large former fume hood and dust collection system were no longer needed and were dismantled and transported off site for recycling and salvage.  Several areas in the facility were stained or otherwise impacted with ink.  The areas of stained concrete were to be cleaned to remove gross staining.  Standard cleaning techniques were used to clean the impacted surfaces.   Several types of degreasers and cleaners were evaluated to determine the optimum product to clean the floors. The facility was ultimately renovated and now manufactures printer heads rather than ink.
