In April 2000, the voters of the City of St. Peters embraced the vision for the Lakeside 370 project: a business park and a new City park. The new 300-acre park was planned to be a recreational focal point for all of St. Charles County and is the biggest park in the City of St. Peters. The park includes a 140 acre recreational lake surrounded by a pedestrian trail. Birds and other wildlife will make the park their home or their stop along the Mississippi flyway. The property will develop into a magnificent park-like setting using an interconnected system of lakes and native plantings, with complementary building types based on architectural standards throughout the development.
Terra Technologies was retained by the City to design more than 50 acres of wetlands and more than 34 acres of riparian habitat as mitigation for the impacts associated with the development. Four separate wetland areas were designed as part of the mitigation. These wetlands contain emergent, scrub-shrub, and forested plant communities. One of the wetlands is a 24 acre emergent marsh complete with a meandering recreational canoe trail located in the large recreational lake built on the site.
In addition to the design of the mitigation wetlands and riparian areas, Terra Technologies monitored approximately 106 acres of existing wetlands for five years. This monitoring was performed to determine if the planned development has any negative impacts on the health of the existing wetlands in order to satisfy a requirement of the Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permit. The monitoring included the collection of detailed information regarding the vegetation, soils, hydrology, and water quality of the wetland areas.
The wetlands and riparian areas were planted in the winter of 2006 and the spring of 2007.
