Gaslight Square
Place III, LLC
Through the 1960s, Gaslight Square was a nationally renowned entertainment venue and the center of the city's Bohemian nightlife. Many of the restaurants, clubs, and bars were embellished with architectural ornament and decorations pouring out of the Mill Creek Valley neighborhoods, which were undergoing wholesale demolition in the name of urban renewal. The district took its name from the lighting fixtures that became common as a result. Gaslight Square fell victim to suburban flight and urban decay in the surrounding areas as early as the 1970s. The last establishment in the area, the Prestige Lounge, shut down in 1990. By the late 1990s most of the buildings were long gone; those that remained stood open and rapidly deteriorating.
Previous Phase I/II investigations revealed environmental concerns/subsurface impacts at the Site from historic dry cleaning operations: petroleum distillates in one portion of the site and tetrachloroethylene in another. Terra Technologies performed additional site characterization in order to be able to more accurately determine the nature and extent of impact and whether remedial actions were required. Subsurface soil, water, and soil vapor sampling was performed along with performance of Human Health Risk Assessments to evaluate contaminants of concern.
This was the first site in the St. Louis area where soil vapor sampling was performed as part of the Missouri Risk Based Corrective Action (MRBCA) Process. The chemical constituents remaining on Site were found to pose no threat to human health. The MDNR issued a Certificate of Completion for the Site which is currently under development. |
