Terra Technologies Designs Modern Green Infrastructure in Roeland Park Kansas

Terra Technologies, in conjunction with The Larkin Group, designed modern green infrastructure improvements for the RC1212 project in Roeland Park Kansas. Construction of the project by the city’s prime contractor was completed in Fall 2009.

Green infrastructure improvements featured two extensive linear rain gardens alongside a concrete-lined swale with modular block walls. Local drainage from 20+ residential yards is routed overland into the linear rain gardens.

The rain gardens implement a bioengineered soil mixture placed atop a traditional French drain. The simplified design represents a variance from expensive rain garden soil mixtures that have proven to result in extensive installation and maintenance costs throughout the metropolitan KC area.

Mass plantings of prairie wildflowers, grasses and shrubs are included in each linear rain garden. The design incorporates a sack gabion let-down structure and dissipation mattress at grade changes. The accompanying sub-drain system routes percolated water into the natural stream at the project’s downstream extent.
