Streambank erosion adjacent to Northwest Crooked Road immediately north of Highway 45 was threatening roadbed stability. In order to facilitate expedited maintenance of the roadside, scientists with Terra Technologies designed a short height gabion toe wall along the stream edge to prevent further migration of erosion under the adjacent roadway. Additional design elements included seeding with native grasses and wildflowers and use of a synthetic turf reinforcement matrix for protection of seedlings during large storm events.
Because the project was designed in accordance with general and regional conditions of a specific nationwide permit, the US Army Corps of Engineers verified the suitability of the project in compliance with Nationwide Permit 13 (Bank Stabilization) and Missouri 401 certification requirements.
