David Flick, Principal and Founder, announces the firm has successfully completed environmental due diligence for the proposed Middle Big Creek Sanitary Sewer Expansion in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Craig Gump, Terrestrial Ecologist with the firm, served as the project manager. A jurisdictional assessment of wetlands and other waters of the United States identified a total of 1,099 lineal feet of perennial stream, 1,306 lineal feet of intermittent stream, 1,494 lineal feet of ephemeral stream, and 33.43 acres of wetlands within the limits of the proposed sewer expansion. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Section 404 Permit and Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) Section 401 Water Quality Certification required the avoidance of the majority of jurisdictional stream channels & wetlands and restoration of temporary impacts to stream banks, wetlands, riparian areas, and all other disturbed areas within the sewer easement.
The firm also received project clearance under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. A Phase I Cultural Resources field investigation and report was completed and identified three sites within the proposed alignment that had the potential for listening on the National Register of Historic Places (NHRP). Phase II testing was conducted on the three sites, and a report concluded the sites did not meet NRHP eligibility requirements and were not significant cultural resources. The Phase II report was submitted to MDNR State Historic Preservation Office for their concurrence, and the project received cultural resources clearance.
Terra Tech also designed the restoration plan to restore temporary impacts to all wetlands and stream channels for construction of the proposed sewer. Restoration activities include stabilization of stream banks in the location of sewer impacts with rolled erosion control products, coir log toes, gabion toes, and native vegetation plantings. Wetland restoration activities include reapplication of stockpiled wetland topsoil and native vegetation re-establishment. Additionally, all other vegetation will be restored where it is disturbed within the sewer easement. A total of 64 acres of native seed and 7,500 native plantings will be installed within the project limits. Construction of the sewer project and restoration activities will begin in the spring of 2011
