David Flick, Principal and Founder, announces the completion of design/build bioengineered streambank improvements in Independence, Missouri in the vicinity of 31 st and Norton. In 2009, a utility line maintenance contractor used herbicide to eradicate brushy vegetation under aerial power lines at the site. The herbicide killed all vegetation, resulting in mass slumping of stream banks.
Scientists and engineers at the firm designed a double stack gabion toe wall at the rear of adjoining residential lots in order to re-establish usable back yards and correct lateral bank instability. Native plantings of Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) were planted atop the toe walls, and turf grass was re-established in the adjacent lawns. The project was constructed in 5 days.
